‘Who Lies Beneath’ Kings Heath Village Square

Kings Heath Village Square is familiar to many but its origins as All Saints Church graveyard may be less well known.  Birmingham Heritage Week offers a unique opportunity Io discover the fascinating stories of those whose remains lie beneath the Square at the heart of Kings Heath.

Visitors are invited to an informative “trail” among the headstones and memorials, supported by an exhibition inside All Saints Church.  From the first interments in 1860, the remains of over 1,500 local people were buried in the church grounds, until the graveyard closed in 1955.

Exhibits explore the history of a diverse local population including generations of local families, a soldier, a vicar and, sadly, many young children buried in the 19th Century.

In 1948 controversial plans laid flat the majority of headstones. Exhibits depict the graveyard “before and after”, a radical change at the heart of Kings Heath. Find out more during a live interpretation of the controversy inside the church at 2pm.

Pre-booking for live interpretation is recommended (see booking section below). There will be a guided tour of the church at 11am. Numbers are limited so please pre-book (see booking section below). All Saints Church will be open throughout the day and is well worth a visit in itself for its striking Victorian architecture and many historic features. No booking required to visit the church
