Moseley Hall Icehouse in Moseley Park & Pool

A chance to see one of the best-preserved icehouses in the West Midlands, originally built for the benefit of the wealthy owners of Moseley Hall. Sited in Moseley Park, an oasis of calm usually only open to keyholders. Moseley Park is hidden behind the shops in Moseley Village. Saved from development in 1898 by some original Nimbys, it has ever since provided a green lung for the area. The C18th icehouse is in excellent condition. Previously owned by the family of John Taylor of Bordesley, the large pool at Moseley Park was created to a design by Humphry Repton. The pool is shown in the 1792 Red Book produced for John Taylor II of Moseley Hall. Walk round the pool, enjoy the peaceful oasis and explore the different habitats in all corners of the park. The icehouse chamber, built with a cavity wall, could have held 20 tonnes of ice. You’ll discover how it would have been kept frozen throughout the year and used in the Hall kitchens to make desserts and cool wine.

You can also visit Moseley Hall Dovecote and garden, just a short walk away and open at the same times.

Footwear suitable for a country walk – the paths can be rough. Most parts are fully accessible with care.

How to get there:
Set back from Alcester Road, the entrance to the park is between Moseley Hive & Dixon’s Estate Agents – and opposite the Coop. Moseley is served by the 50, 35, 1 and 41 bus services and by West Midlands Rail. The nearest station is Moseley Village.
