Oral historian Helen Lloyd will play brief audio extracts from life-story recordings that take us on a journey through the twentieth century. Helen worked for many years as a reporter for BBC Radio including Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and recorded over a hundred life-stories of people in the West Midlands for the BBC’s Millennium project, The Century Speaks. From these life-stories she made a series of programmes which won the Commission for Racial Equality’s Race in the Media Award in 2000, and she then set up her own oral history consultancy. Her work includes 150 life-stories recorded for Birmingham City Council’s ‘Millennibrum’ project, now in the Library of Birmingham, and also the audio used in the National Trust’s Back to Backs. Refreshments available (tea, coffee, cake).
