The Birmingham Proof House was established in 1813 to test firearms and ammunition to ensure user safety. Over 200 years later the proof house is still at the forefront of safety testing.
During Birmingham Heritage Week you can join a guided tour to learn about the historical development of small arms and ammunition and the ongoing responsibilities of the Birmingham Proof house. The tour will start with coffee and an introductory talk about the history of the Proof House and the Birmingham Gun Trade in the Board Room, followed by a visit to the museum pattern rooms, displaying historic firearms and ammunition. Please note, the tour does not include the modern testing facilities or laboratory.
Photography is not permitted. Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We do not recommend the tour for children under the age of 12.
The Proof House is Grade II* listed with narrow access areas, steep stairs and no lift. The tour does include first floor areas, and the building and tour are not wheelchair accessible.
