John Baskerville is Birmingham’s great lost hero. The ripples of his printing and typographic influence are still felt today, 250 years after his death. Yet Birmingham presents him as a background player rather than a paradigm of success in arts and industry, with the gravestones he carved lost, the whereabouts of his japanning unknown, his only portrait being held in the depths of the museum storeroom and his catacomb in the Jewellery Quarter sealed off.
Ben Waddington explores the greater timeline of John Baskerville—what remains and what was lost—in this illustrated presentation at •nook• gallery. The 45 min presentation will be followed by Q&A and a chance to browse the cinema history exhibition at •nook•
