Behind the Picture: Discovering Lisel Haas and Grete Bermbach

Over the past year, the ‘Discovering Lisel Haas’ project has continued to flourish as our researchers have discovered more about Lisel Haas and her life. After a trip to Haas’ hometown of Mönchengladbach, Iris Bertz and Jen Wilbur were able to find more pieces in the puzzle of Haas’ life, including finding out more information about Lisel’s life partner, Grete Bermbach. They were not just life partners but business partners, and women who showed incredible commitment to each other in the face of adversity. Alongside the exhibition, we are delighted to share this event which delves deeper into the story of Lisel and Grete, as well as sharing new insights into their lives in Mönchengladbach and photographic practice.

This event will feature a panel of special guests who have been involved in the project with the opportunity to view the exhibition in a new light.

The ‘Discovering Lisel Haas exhibition is in the gallery space at the Library of Birmingham and can be viewed during Library opening hours.

How to get there:
The Library of Birmingham is an 11 minute walk from New Street Station’s Grand Central exit through the town centre. There is also a tram from Grand Central to the Library which takes 9 minutes. For bus routes, the 12/13 and 23/34 Platinum stop outside the library. There is no parking at the Library of Birmingham, with the closest car park at Arena Birmingham, a 10 minute walk away.
