Discover Balsall Heath through the eyes of Balsall Heathans with Mick Turner’s stunning photos, archive images, poetry, art, interviews history trail. Touring Exhibition over Birmingham Heritage Week across venues in Balsall Heath. Each event of six offers unique insight, trails and activities relating to their history and connection with Balsall Heath:
Highlights include guided tours of the historic SS. John & Martin Catholic Church and the Moseley Road Heritage Trail, alongside pop-ups at iconic local hubs like The Old Print Works, Creation Climbing Centre, and St. Paul’s Venture. Plus, don’t miss an intimate afternoon on September 20th featuring acclaimed poet Liz Berry, packed with poetry, film, and Balsall Heath memories.
We are living through changing times, very much reflected in Balsall Heath and its recent history. In living memory many migrants have moved into the area, and some residents compulsorily rehoused elsewhere. Whole streets have been built and demolished. Meanwhile the area has been in decline with uncleared bomb sites from the Second World War still acting as playgrounds into the 1970s, poor housing still an issue, high unemployment, appalling health statistics, poverty and a major prostitution problem.
This has also been a time of new opportunities, new organisations, new ideas, new faith centres and communities arriving in Balsall Heath. There was growing dynamism and hope as the groundwork was laid for the thriving multi-cultural community of today’s Balsall Heath.
