Stories to Remember: Tales from the Jewellery Quarter’s Mass Graves

The dead tell no tales, so the living must…

Key Hill Cemetery is not only the resting place of the rich or famous. Most of its occupants are, in fact, working-class people buried in public graves where they lie with over a hundred others for company. This is about them.

Over the last couple of months, a group of local writers have been creating short stories & poems inspired by the lives – and deaths – of these so-called ordinary people. Come and hear them tell their tales, accompanied by sounds of a harmonium and the strains of an old wind-up gramophone. Wander among the graves and you will find more vivid accounts of Birmingham life from a time gone by. A fascinating, thought-provoking, and at times poignant window into these uncelebrated lives.

Content Advisory: Themes include mental illness, child death & homophobia.

Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome. Please note the ground can be uneven under foot. The nearest toilet is at the Jewellery Quarter Train Station, although this will be closed from 1pm-3pm due to ticket office closure.

Stories to Remember is funded by The University of Hertfordshire and Our Digital Ancestors. Our Digital Ancestors is made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England
