St Nicolas Church

St Nicolas Church enjoys an elevated position on Kings Norton Green and its tall spire has been a local landmark for centuries. The earliest parts of the church date back to the 12th century. The beautiful stained-glass windows are by Kempe and Hardman. Inside, the church has many stone memorials, including a large alabaster tomb-chest for Sir Richard Grevis and his wife (1630s) and there are many wall monuments commemorating, and documenting, local families through time. The newest memorial is for Rev Wilbert Awdry who started writing the Thomas the Tank Engine stories when he was curate at St Nicolas during in the Second World War.
St Nicolas is one of Birmingham’s four medieval churches. Other medieval churches are St Giles (Sheldon), St Edburgha’s (Yardley) and St Lawrence (Northfield). All four medieval churches can be visited during Birmingham Heritage Week.

The St. Nicolas church team has created a self-guided audio tour of the church, which will be launched on the day when the building is first open to Heritage Week visitors, Saturday 9 September.
