Cathedral of the Industrial Revolution
Join historian Chris Rice for a tour of St Mary’s Church Handsworth, the final resting place of 18th century industrial giants Matthew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdock.
The tour will explore the historic development of the Grade II* listed parish church from Norman times to the 20th century, and its substantial rebuilding by William Hollins and Thomas Rickman in the 1820s and J A Chatwin between 1868-70. A particular focus of the tour will be its connections with Matthew Boulton and James Watt, especially the story of the Watt Memorial Chapel and the creation of the outstanding memorials to the two men by John Flaxman and Sir Francis Chantrey.
