Birchfield Heritage Trail
This new trail – the Red Route – takes us on a journey around the east side of Birchfield. It reveals hidden stories of the Birchfield area, how the place has changed over time and the many links between Birchfield and other parts of the world. The trail raises questions about Britain’s colonial history, the impacts of which continue to the present day.
The tour includes the site of a 2nd Century Roman Kiln; the locations of Aston Villa’s first match and first permanent football ground, and the first Odeon Cinema in the UK. It also explores the area’s contribution to documentary photography and raises questions about Britain’s colonial history.

On Sat 9 Sept the trail is part of the Birchfield Jazz and Heritage Festival at the United Reformed Church, 13 Wilton Road, Handsworth B20 3RX and funded through the CWG Legacy Community Events Fund.
