Botanical Gardens

An oasis of delightful gardens, peaceful and tranquil, just one mile from the city centre. Opened in 1832, these historic gardens are home to fascinating plant collections. Four stunning glasshouses filled with exotic plants take you from tropical rainforest to arid desert. Beyond, fifteen acres of beautiful landscaped gardens offer sunny lawns and collections of roses, alpines, perennials, rare trees and shrubs, ideal for picnics and exploring every day of the year. Special features include the Japanese Garden and National Bonsai Collection, four-flight Lawn Aviary and Rock Pool with its Diamond Jubilee Cascade. There is also a Woodland Walk, Pinetum and Bamboo Maze. The many attractions include an art gallery, tearoom and the Shop at the Gardens is well-stocked with plants, quality gifts, cards, confectionery and books. Open Air Music from bandstand, many events throughout the year for all the family.
