Centenary Square and Canals

Virtual tour around Centenary Square and along the canals which can also be done on your phone or tablet in the city centre as a real walk.

We look at the way the town of Birmingham developed in part due to its position on a sandstone ridge. We see the importance of the natural resources close both in the Black Country and Forest of Arden which helped develop skills in metalworking. From the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution to the modern car industry we learn how Birmingham became a major industrial power and when this decline in the late 20th century how it has reinvented itself with a much broader employment base. We take a look at the canals which were hugely important for transport in the 18th and 19th centuries and are now incorporated into the modern city.
