Austin Village Tour
Join us for a guided walk through Austin Village, a model village built by Herbert Austin for munitions Workers in the First World War. Less well known than nearby Bournville village, the wooden bungalows are unique with a fascinating history.
Join a leisurely 1.5 hours stroll and hear from our guide, a local resident, about the history of this estate, which includes 200 prefabricated cedar wood bungalows, shipped from the Aladdin Timber company of Bay City, USA in 1917 and erected in a very short time. You will hear about its development after the war, the survival of this temporary housing solution for over 100 years and the beginning of conservation status in the 1990s. T here will also be an opportunity to see a detailed scale model of an original bungalow and to talk to local residents and ask questions.
