St Mary’s Convent and Heritage Centre
St Mary’s Convent, 98 Hunters Road, Handsworth B19 1EB
St Mary’s is a little-known architectural gem by Augustus Welby Pugin, and is an interesting example of Pugin’s Convent architecture. The convent also has strong historical connections with the Hardman family of Hardman & Co. stained glass fame. Come and be guided around the convent, see the restored interiors, ornate carvings and Hardman artefacts and windows. Learn about the story of the Sisters of Mercy through our exhibition trail of archives and artefacts. Discover more about the nursing role of the Sisters in the Crimean War, about the Sisters as teachers, and gain an insight into religious life from the 1830s-2000s. Discover the beautiful chapel and the bedroom of our foundress, the Venerable Catherine McAuley. There will also be a chance to meet some of the Sisters. The Sisters are offering rolling tours throughout the day (approx 1 hr visit time)
No booking required.
